Food Is Free Inc. Volunteers

Please note : we have a COVID-plan & procedures in place for all our Food Is Free Inc. volunteers & visitors to keep our community well.

Our volunteer team are our most valued element of Food Is Free Inc. as a grassroots community led team. If you live in Ballarat & surrounds and are keen to learn more about how you can help please get in touch with our Volunteers Manager Virginia today via volunteer@foodisfree.com.au

We have a team of approx. 70 marvellous volunteers who assist with regular weekly Food Is Free Laneway and fortnightly/monthly Food Is Free Green Space shifts varying from 30 mins up to an hour per session. Duties carried out ensure the health & safety of all our visitors, and tasks include disposing of perished food, general tidying, attending to the jars/bottles and garden pots recycle station, watering our plants, and other gardening tasks. In the Laneway we have 3 volunteers daily and 4 on Sat & Sun every day of the year. This enables the Laneway to be very well attended so all our visitors can enjoy their time spent with us, plus have a chat to a volunteer and be greeted by a friendly face if they are on duty. Full training and induction provided to all our volunteers. Families/friends always welcome to work as a group if you like - more the merrier!

Don't know much about gardening? No worries - we encourage all levels, all ages, all backgrounds being an all-inclusive space. Plus, you can learn new skills/ideas as you go!

Food Is Free Green Space is adjacent to the Laneway and just up the road. This special space is our community growing area with more many productive garden beds plus a recycling area (Greens Recycle Depot which accepts your toilet rolls & egg cartons which we put in our compost systems). We have a team of excellent humans who help us monitor our recycles centre, attend to the garden beds and worm farms, turn our compost bins, and build soil from the organic items our visitors leave behind. Making our own soil ensures us to be as self-sufficient as possible, plus provides the opportunity for our community to not only learn  about waste, but be responsible for our planet.

We also hold intermittent working bees where anyone can help out, plus we hold volunteer exclusive events so it's not just work - it is also fun. Volunteering is a great way to engage in your local community plus meet new friends along the way.

Please get in touch if you are keen on being part of this very dynamic fun group of eco warriors we call our Food Is Free Inc. volunteers!

Community groups/schools encouraged to discuss volunteering options with us also.
